Things to Think About Each Year as a Pre-Health Student
Freshman Year
- Meet with academic advisor to discuss four year plan
- Think about a major and minor courses of study
- Begin extracurricular activities
- Review medical school admission requirements: prerequisite classes and clinical experience
- Consider work/volunteer in medical area
- Consider research opportunities and attend Chapman Undergraduate Student Research Day to learn more about research you may be interested in
- Maintain an excellent GPA
Sophomore Year
- Meet with academic advisor to discuss your program
- Work/volunteer in medical area
- Consider plans for the summer
- Maintain excellent GPA
- Think about professors who will write letters of recommendation
- If you plan to take the MCAT, DAT, GRE, PCAT, OAT early (summer before junior year), begin to study
- Apply for the MCAT, DAT, GRE, PCAT, OAT
- Research schools you may be interested in
Junior Year
- Meet with academic advisor
- Study for MCAT, DAT, GRE, PCAT, OAT (If haven't already taken)
- Apply for the MCAT, DAT, GRE, PCAT, OAT (If haven't already taken)
- Maintain excellent GPA
- Continue extracurricular activities
- Work/volunteer in medical field
- Research
- Leadership Opportunities
- Begin preparing personal statement
- Request Letters of Recommendation
- Visit local schools in which you are interested
- Apply to medical (dental, vet etc). schools
Senior Year
- Work/volunteer in medical field
- Maintain excellent GPA
- Retake MCAT, DAT, GRE, PCAT, OAT to improve scores (if necessary)
- Confirm that schools have received your application and letters of recommendation
- Interview at medical (dental, vet etc.) schools
- Complete financial aid forms
- Accept offers
- Write thank you notes to your references
